5 Reasons You Should Try Acro Yoga

I’m so new to the acro yoga movement and I have to say, I’m hooked! Obsessed! And I can’t wait to try it again. One of my good friends, An Truong of An Solo Yoga, introduced me to the experience and it is one of my favorite ways to move.

Acro yoga combines the practice of yoga and acrobatics. It’s a beautiful practice and certainly an intimidating one if you look at it, BUT here are 5 reasons why you should try it!

It seems impossible, but it’s not!

Yoga is already an intimidating practice that a lot of people stray from. It’s easy to have thoughts like, “I’m not flexible enough.” or “I can’t contort or lift myself like that.” I used to be one of those people and I still can’t touch my toes. It’s a practice designed for everyone, at every level, at any flexibility. We all need it. Now add the element of being lifted in the air to that and you’ve got a whole other level of “oh hell naw!” I’m sure. My favorite thing about trying it for the first time is the realization that it’s not impossible. You feel as though you’ve accomplished something that seems out of reach. And that feeling is incredible.

The Adrenaline Rush

The thrill of being lifted or doing the lifting is exhilarating. So this must be what those Cirque Du Soleil artists feel like, right? It’s such a unique experience you can’t help but feel giddy. Being upside down, or side ways can be a little disorienting because you’re not used to it, but trust me, it’s really fun. I’m a huge fan of trying different things. I can’t get enough of it. I love flying!

Meet People and find community

While it is a partner workout, it isn’t exclusive just for couples. Singles signup and partners are assigned. I think it’s a great way to make new friends, have fun with a loved one, or even have a fun couple’s date. The practice is also not discriminatory to size and weight. There’s an amazing acro-yoga community here in Dallas and it’s growing. Join the movement.

Challenge your mind and body

Perhaps you are a novice or seasoned yogi. This is another great way to push yourself and see what your body is capable of doing. It’s also an emotional and mental challenge too. You’re having to trust your partner, have faith in your own abilities and let go of fear. My guy friend described it as a next level trust fall. During my experience, I was afraid of falling, but my partner took care of me and I just had to leave it all in his hands, literally! Acro Yoga is truly an empowering practice for the body, mind, and soul.

Instaworthy

Pretty self explanatory because the you are going to feel like a badass in those poses and you have to snap a pic of course.

There’s a local facebook group in Dallas you can join if you’re curious about meet ups called Dallas Acro Jams. You can also follow my good friend An on Instagram at @an_solo_.
