Fitness Dance Class Review: MoveStudio’s Zumba

Back again at MoveStudio and this time for Zumba!

The Instructor: Michie is sassy and just full of energy. It was almost overwhelming watching her. How can one person have so much energy?! She is one intense and fun teacher. She is the resident Zumba instructor and I loved that she was having so much fun teaching. You can tell she really loves what she does and that’s refreshing. As she began teaching the steps, it went by a little too fast in my opinion. I’ve only ever been to one other Zumba class, so I don’t really have much to compare her teaching too.

The Class: I think three minutes in, I contemplated leaving because I felt like such an idiot, but I had to get that thought out of my head as fast as possible. It was really intimidating and I thought it went by a little too fast for my preference. Leave it to my friend to make us stand in the very front of the class, but I stuck it out. There were parts that were a little easier for me to catch on (primarily the slower parts), but I was pretty much off the entire time. lol. Two left feet yo! It was like multitasking with my eyes, legs, arms, and mind. I had a hard time following her cues. For the most part, I felt like i was shuffling left to right like a crab. Muy sexy!

Zumba is a class you go to a few times before you become more familiar with certain steps and moves. It’s recommended to attend about three classes to get the swing of things. I think once you become somewhat familiar, any variation of it comes a lot easier as opposed to being completely new to the whole thang (which was me). My friend who is a zumba queen said she really enjoyed the class. Compared to most others, this was actually a lot of fun and it didn’t bore her.

The Music: Michie played mostly Latin music. There was a spurt of some belly dancing and maybe one or two hip hop/modern songs. I wanted more top 40s to dance to. The music was upbeat and fast paced as expected and a lot of fun nonetheless. There was a great mix of bachata, merengue, salsa, Cumbia, and other movements. I thinks Michie did a good job mixing it up. She didn’t have a set playlist so she would choose from her playlist which songs she felt like dancing too. I think the few breaks between each song was a good reprieve for some to catch a breath or some water. Speaker system is solid.

Who Came: Mostly ladies. I did spot a very tall man in the back and I totally applaud him. I rarely see guys in dance classes so I thought that was kind of cool.

What I Loved: I really liked Michie. She seems like someone you could totally have a lot of fun with and she is really friendly with her regulars. At the end of the class, she reached out and welcomed newbies like myself to her class and encouraged us to come back.  I’m glad I was able to make it through her class. Eventually, I stopped worrying about how technical my footwork was and went for the general movements and shift as a whole. I’ll get the footwork eventually. At the end of the day, zumba is still meant to be a cardio class and it certainly was. It was aerobic enough to work up a good sweat. She mixed in some squatting and lunge movements which I really liked. She also teaches zumba with weights. Sounds

What I disliked:  I wish there was at least a quick introduction to zumba. I felt more thrown into it than guided. I also wished there was a little more hip hop or top 40s in the mix.

The Takeaway: It’s a fun class and I’m glad I did it. I wish I knew how many calories I burned with all the movements that were incorporated, but at the very least I know I got in my steps! The drop-in class floats between an introductory and intermediate class. It’s not as quick to pick up until you’ve come back a few times. That would probably be the one deterrent for newbies regarding Zumba in general.

** Sorry I wasn’t able to get any photos or video. I was too busy shuffling left and right like a sexy crab and trying to learn the steps. I definitely need a clone to do all the extra work for me.**
